2013 Audi S8 Total Car Score Analysis

The 2013 Audi S8 doesn't have enough ratings to earn a Valid Total Car Score.

The S8, Audi's flagship, is an impressive fullsize luxury sport sedan whose unbelievably opulent five-passenger interior is only overshadowed by its innovative technology and unexpected performance. While the S8 isn't the only competitor in this segment, Audi is leader when it comes to balancing luxury, sport and price in an aluminum-intensive package.

Despite its high-performance tuning and go-fast appearance, the big Audi S8 is much more comfortable as a touring GT rather than a canyon carver. Pushed hard, the four-door rolls heavily on its suspension, and it understeers at the limit of adhesion. Compounding the problem, Audi's "Drive Select" system doesn't seem to offer a setting aggressive enough to counter the handling deficiency.

Audi's all-new third-generation A8 sedan was introduced two years ago. The S8 model, a high-performance derivative with an upgraded drivetrain and interior, is new for 2013.

2013 Audi S8 Model Line-Up

The 2013 Audi S8 is a fullsize five-passenger vehicle sold in a sedan body style. There is one trim level.

Audi's most recent S8 featured a de-tuned naturally-aspirated Lamborghini V10 under its hood. In sharp contrast, the new iteration is fitted with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 rated at 520 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Mated to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi's permanent quattro all-wheel drive, the big sedan is capable of breaking the 60 mph benchmark in about four seconds flat. It is not only much quicker than its predecessor, but it is more fuel efficient too.

The S8 is very well equipped in standard configuration with leather upholstery, full power accessories, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, multi-zone climate control, keyless entry/ignition, Audi's Multi-Media Interface (MMI) and 20-inch alloy wheels. To differentiate the S8 from its standard A8 siblings, Audi fits it with a unique front fascia, aluminum exterior accents and quad tailpipes. The cabin has also been configured with sportier appointments including sport seats with diamond-cross stitching, a sport steering wheel and carbon trim.

The options list for the well-appointed Audi S8 is rather short, consisting of choices such as rear side airbags, 21-inch wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes and all-season tires.

The EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2013 Audi S8 sedan have not been released.
