2012 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid Total Car Score Analysis

Despite a fuel economy improvement compared to its conventionally-powered sibling, the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid earns a Total Car Score that's below average for the Large SUV & Crossover segment. 
 
On the plus side, reviewers noted the Tahoe Hybrid's relatively impressive fuel mileage for a fullsized truck-based SUV. Other positives include the spacious interior with room for up to eight passengers or a fair bit of gear. 
 
These strengths come at a price, however, namely an MSRP that's significantly higher than both the base Tahoe model and other more maneuverable and equally fuel-efficient competitors. The interior's most glaring weakness is the heavy third-row seat that must be pulled completely out to make use of the sizeable cargo hold. Its reduced towing capacity compared to traditional Tahoe models may also be a deal-breaker for some. 
 
While the trend towards lighter, less thirsty vehicles makes its future uncertain, the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid returns with several significant upgrades, including standard front-seat side-impact airbags and new audio and navigation systems.

The 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid is a full-size SUV that's offered in a single well-equipped trim level. 
 
Under the hood is a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, made up of a 6.0-liter V8 engine that produces 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque and a pair of electric motors, good for a total output of 379 hp. A four-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, though a four-wheel drive system with a low-range transfer case available as an option. 
 
Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, running boards, power-folding heated outside mirrors with driver's-side auto-dimming, ultrasonic rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, 60/40-split-folding second-row and 50/50-split third-row seats, power-adjustable pedals, remote start, cruise control, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a rearview camera, navigation system, Bluetooth and a CD stereo with satellite radio.  
 
Major options include a power sunroof and a rear-seat video entertainment system. 
 
Regardless of drivetrain, the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid earns EPA fuel economy estimates of 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. 
 
Properly equipped, the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid can tow up to 6,200 pounds.
