Vehicle Review: 2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty
2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty Total Car Score Analysis
The 2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickups didn’t receive enough reviews to earn a valid Total Car Score.
The Super Duty trucks went through a thorough revision last year, adding features and upping capacities to make them among the hardest working trucks on the market. In fact, an old-fashioned horsepower war led Ford’s engineers to squeeze a class-leading 400 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque from the new Power Stroke turbodiesel.
And Ford remains the only maker to offer a consumer-oriented (not commercial medium-duty) model with tow and payload capacities over the standard one-ton: the dual-rear-wheel-only F-450, which for 2012 can tow up to 24,500 pounds with the Power Stroke and a fifth-wheel hitch.
About the only negative comments the Super Duty gets relate to its front-end styling, as its toothy grille and huge blue oval are deemed over-the-top by some.
Because it went through a redesign last year, the 2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty sees just a few revisions. Frame and hitch modifications have increased tow capacities for some models, and the fifth-wheel hitch is now available in the 6.75-foot cargo box.
2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty Model Line-Up
The 2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty line includes F-250 (three-quarter-ton), F-350 and F-450 (one-ton) pickups. All are available in regular cab, SuperCab and SuperCrew bodies, with a choice of gas or diesel engines, three bed lengths, single or dual rear wheels (for one-ton models), four trim levels and 4x2 or 4x4 powertrains.
The base 6.2-liter gas V8 produces 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, while the optional Power Stroke 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8 makes 400 hp and 800 lb-ft. Both are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions.
Trim levels begin with the XL model, which has a black-painted grille and bumpers, 17-inch steel wheels, and vinyl upholstery and flooring. The XLT gets a chrome grille and bumpers, alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, carpets, and power door locks and windows.
Lariat models have 18-inch alloy wheels and leather-trimmed upholstery, automatic climate controls, adjustable pedals and premium audio. Top-tier King Ranch editions get two-tone paint, step bars and unique 18-inch wheels on the outside; and heated and cooled front seats with saddle-like leather upholstery on the inside.
Properly equipped, the 2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty can tow up to 24,500 pounds with a fifth wheel hitch and 17,500 pounds with a conventional hitch.
