Vehicle Review: 2012 Honda CR-V

2012 Honda CR-V Total Car Score Analysis

The 2012 Honda CR-V has an enviable Total Car Score. This is one of the best-selling and most highly regarded compact crossovers. For 2012, there's a new generation -- the fourth -- and it builds on the previous models' success while addressing some failings.

Reviewers have found the cabin to be quieter and the ride smoother. Once they did the math, they discovered the engine to have a little more power yet run more efficiently. And they liked the longer list of standard equipment that now includes Bluetooth, Pandora internet radio and a rear-view camera. Thankfully, the element of driving fun is still evident, despite not having a V6 engine option.

Cargo space is a generous 37.2 cubic feet. A new mechanism allows an easier folding of the rear seats, resulting in 70.9 cubic feet. Performing the duty of a contemporary family car, the CR-V now offers a rear-seat DVD system.

2012 Honda CR-V Model Line-Up

The 2012 Honda CR-V five-seater compact crossover SUV comes as a front-drive model, or with optional all-wheel drive. It's available in LX and EX trim levels, plus variations on the EX theme that bring rear seat entertainment, leather and navigation into play -- although the rear seat DVD system cannot be ordered along with navigation.

One drivetrain propels the whole range: a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine making 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, linked to a five-speed automatic transmission.

Standard equipment in the LX includes air conditioning, keyless entry, power accessories, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth and an iPod interface. The EX brings alloy wheels and sunroof, plus the opportunity to add various option bundles that include heated mirrors, roof rails, heated seats, and an upgraded audio system.

Safety equipment includes ABS, whiplash-mitigating active front head restraints, traction and stability controls, side airbags for the front seats, plus side curtain airbags for both rows of seats.

The CR-V earned EPA ratings of 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive versions. With all-wheel drive, those figures are 22/30/25 mpg.

The 2012 Honda CR-V, when properly equipped, can tow up to 1,500 pounds.
