Vehicle Review: 2012 Infiniti IPL G
2012 Infiniti IPL G Total Car Score Analysis
The 2012 Infiniti IPL G Coupe earns one of the highest Total Car Scores in the Luxury High Performance segment -- quite a feat, considering the other cars making up the category.
IPL stands for Infiniti Performance Line. The company has taken the regular G Coupe (an excellent and well-regarded machine) and carried out in an official capacity what many G owners have done by themselves: customize it.
It gets a deeper front fascia, sculpted side skirts, rear spoiler and a rear fascia that incorporates chrome exhaust tips. The interior gets red-stitched leather and a bundle of features factored into the price.
The engine also receives a modest boost in power compared with the regular model (18 horsepower and 6 pound-feet), accompanied by the more vocal free-flow exhaust system. The brakes are upgraded, the front springs stiffened by 20 percent, the rear springs stiffened by 10 percent, and the dampers re-calibrated for a tauter, sportier ride and handling.
Reviewers appreciate the extra gusto and precision feel to the chassis that the IPL treatment imparts, but find the optional automatic transmission a little slow on the uptake, despite the steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.
This is a carryover from 2011; a convertible version is due for the 2013 model year. A revamp of the whole G range is expected in 2013.
2012 Infiniti IPL G Model Line-Up
The compact four-seat 2012 Infiniti IPL G Coupe comes with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic. And that's about the only decision to make. Everything else in the car comes as standard.
A 3.7-liter V6 engine provides 348 horsepower and 276 pound-feet of torque. This drives the rear wheels only, as there is no all-wheel-drive option for the IPL coupe.
Standard equipment includes push-button ignition, a limited-slip differential, voice-activated navigation, a rearview camera, satellite radio, Bose audio system, Bluetooth, a power-adjustable steering column, leather upholstery, an illuminated glove compartment, a power moonroof and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Standard safety equipment includes side curtain airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags, whiplash-reducing active front head restraints, plus ABS with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist.
EPA estimates for the 2012 Infiniti IPL G Coupe are 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway with the auto gearbox; 17/25 mpg with the manual.
