"Fresh from last year's redesign, the Kia Sorento gains a few more upgrades for 2012. Topping the list is a new, optional four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection for more power and better fuel economy. Also new are a ventilated driver seat, stain-resistant seat fabric and Kia's "Uvo" voice-activated control interface."

The Car Connection
"Choosing the right Sorento means knowing how you'll use it. For most of today's crossover drivers, the front-drive, four-cylinder version with direct injection is a fine choice. Skip the manual transmission and the base four-cylinder: the 191-hp four spins sweetly enough, and delivers as much as 32 mpg highway according to the EPA's ratings, with a well-sorted shift quality and good handling that gives more weight to comfortable ride than to even moderately brisk cornering."

US News/World Report
"Test drivers are impressed by how well the 2012 Kia Sorento drives for an SUV in its price range. Though some say its ride is too firm, most mention that this helps it feel composed over twisty roads. Even the base engine is adequate for most drivers, but the Sorento’s upgraded powerplants earn praise for their capable performance. And even though this crossover can’t handle hardcore off-roading, test drivers say its optional all-wheel drive is capable enough to get the kids to school in bad weather."

Fuel Economy Factor:
Fuel Economy Factor
3
The Fuel Economy Factor influence to the Total Car Score is determined by first calculating a vehicle's average fuel economy number. This number is derived from the average miles-per-gallon figure a vehicle receives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) across all available drivetrains (engines, transmissions and driven wheels). The number is then compared to the average fuel economy number for the entire segment in which a vehicle competes. The difference between a vehicle's fuel economy average number and the segment's fuel economy average number is what decides whether the fuel economy factor pulls a vehicle's Total Car Score up or down, and by how much.
For instance, if a car's average fuel economy is 21 mpg and the entire segment's fuel economy average is 19 mpg that vehicle gets 2 points added to its Total Car Score.
How is the Total Car Score Calculated?
Although each of these nine sources uses a unique ratings system (i.e. numbers vs. bubbles vs. stars, etc.), we convert those systems into a simple percentage score with equal weighting for each of the nine sources.
