Vehicle Review: 2012 Land Rover Range Rover
2012 Land Rover Range Rover Total Car Score Analysis
The 2012 Land Rover Range Rover does not have enough ratings to earn a valid Total Car Score in the Ultra Luxury SUV and Crossover category.
The Range Rover was credited for its superb off-road performance, car-like driving character and quiet, supple ride. Reviewers also made note of the Range Rover’s potent supercharger and luxurious, high-tech interior.
On the negative side, the Range Rover’s interior is considered less roomy than competitors. Its controls are seen as counter-intuitive and it lacks a third-row option. Other minuses include lackluster fuel economy and a poor reputation for reliability.
The 2012 Land Rover Range Rover is in its third-generation. It was last fully redesigned 10 years ago. For 2012, the Range Rover gets revised trim on the outside and an HD Radio on the inside. This year also brings a special Autobiography Ultimate Edition model limited to 500 units.
2012 Land Rover Range Rover Model Line-Up
The 2012 Land Rover Range Rover is a luxury SUV offering seating for five. It comes in two trim levels: HSE and Supercharged.
Both models come equipped with an air suspension, heated mirrors, xenon headlights, 19-inch wheels and a sunroof. The cabin offers tri-zone climate control, heated power front seats, push-button start, leather upholstery and a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Standard tech features include a back-up camera system, specialized navigation for on- and off-road driving, Bluetooth and a 14-speaker premium stereo.
The Supercharged model adds adaptive suspension damping and Brembo brakes.
Notable options include 20-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, four-zone climate control and a rear DVD system.
Standard safety features encompass ABS, stability control with rollover avoidance, front active head restraints and seven airbags (including one at the driver’s knee). There’s also optional radar-based Emergency Braking Assists and adaptive cruise control with collision mitigation.
Both Range Rovers bring full-time four-wheel drive and a 5.0-liter V8 engine. The base HSE model has 375 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque. The Supercharged model generates 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft. Both versions utilize a six-speed automatic transmission. Both also benefit from the Terrain Response system, which offers driver-selectable settings for treading various surfaces -- gravel, snow, mud and sand. Max towing capacity for the Range Rover is 7,700 pounds.
EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover is 12 mpg city, 18 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined for either model.
