2012 Lexus LS Total Car Score Analysis

The 2012 Lexus LS 460 is the cream of the crop in the ultra-luxury sedan segment, sharing the top Total Car Score with its hybrid LS 600h L brother.

A pillowy ride and church-like quiet define the character of the LS 460, which is built with precision and state-of-the-art technology inside and out. The care shown in the car’s build quality is mirrored by pampering dealer service Lexus owners are loathe to give up. With competitive pricing and a long list of standard equipment the LS 460 and LS 460 L (long wheelbase) offer a powerful combination of luxury, quality and value.

Of course pillowy and church-like are attributes some buyers consider bland, as is the LS 460’s conservative exterior styling. A lack of steering feel, noticeable body roll and an indecisive transmission dampen driving fun even with an optional Sport package.

The 2012 LS 460 remains identical to theprevious year's model, save for the addition of a new Nebula Gray Pearl exterior color.

2012 Lexus LS Model Line-Up

The 2012 Lexus LS 460 is a four or five passenger full-size luxury sedan available in standard and long wheelbase versions with rear- and all-wheel drive.

The base LS 460 offers V8 power and considerable standard equipment ranging from 18-inch wheels to iPod/Bluetooth connectivity, 16/12-way driver/passenger seats and four leather and wood trim combinations. The long wheelbase LS 460 L adds five inches of length, devoted mostly to rear seating. Comfort, Luxury and Sport option packages add goodies like power trunk/door closers, heated rear seats, semi-aniline leather, 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, reclining rear passenger seat with ottoman and massage and a 9-inch rear LCD screen.

Rear-wheel-drive LS 460s use a 4.6-liter V8 that produces 380horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque and zero-to-60 runs of 5.4 seconds. Power is routed through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The AWD 460 retains the same powertrain, detuned slightly to 357 hp and 344 lb-ft. Sixty mph comes up in 5.9 seconds.

Safety features abound, from eight standard airbags to adaptive front lighting, electronic brake force distribution and stability control, plus Lexus’ Advanced Pre-Collision system.

The standard 2012 Lexus LS 460 achieves 16 mpg city, 24 mpg highway while the long wheelbase LS 460L gets a near identical 16/23. Both are ULEV-II classified.
