Vehicle Review: 2012 Mitsubishi Galant

2012 Mitsubishi Galant Total Car Score Analysis

The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant earned a below average lowest Total Car Score in the midsize sedan category, as reviewers saw it as a car whose time has come and gone.

This iteration of the Galant has been on the market for eight years, and in that time the rest of the category has made so many strides in the areas of performance, efficiency, design, ergonomics, ride and handling that the aging Galant simply can’t keep up.

The Galant isn’t a bad car per se. It has a roomy interior, a smooth ride, a lengthy warranty and, especially in the top-shelf SE model, a long list of standard features. Yet those pluses can’t offset the fact that by just about every other metric -- engine performance, fuel economy, cabin material quality, interior and exterior design -- the competition is simply better.

Instead of going through a complete redesign, the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant will cease production at the end of the model year.

2012 Mitsubishi Galant Model Line-Up

The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant is a four-door midsize sedan that offers five-passenger seating in two models.

The Galant ES is well equipped for a base model, with standard features that include keyless entry, automatic headlights, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 sound system and power windows, mirrors and door locks.

Step up to the Galant SE and the equipment list grows to include 18-inch alloy wheels, a DVD-based navigation system with backup camera, a power sunroof, heated front seats and a premium audio system with Bluetooth. A Leather Package available on SE models adds leather seating surfaces and a rear deck spoiler.

All Galant models are motivated by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and 157 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels.

The EPA rates the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant as achieving 21 mpg city, 30 highway and 24 combined.
