Vehicle Review: 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander
2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Total Car Score Analysis
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander earns a below average Total Car Score for the Midsize SUVs & Crossovers segment.
Not to be confused with the smaller Outlander Sport (reviewed separately), the all-new Outlander made its debut at the Geneva Auto Show and will roll out to European and Asian markets before it goes on sale in the U.S.
Mitsubishi has been fairly tight-lipped about the Outlander’s details; those who saw the crossover at Geneva had better things to say about its new interior design -- with better materials, a more user-friendly third seating row and a powered liftgate -- than its rather bland exterior styling.
The engines announced for Europe -- a 2.0 liter gas and 2.2-liter diesel -- most likely won’t make it to America. Instead we expect a new V6 and an efficient, large-displacement four-cylinder. An alternative-fuel version will also be available; some sources said it will have an extended-range electric motor with a gas engine generator on board like the Chevy Volt, while Mitsubishi calls it just an “EV-based Outlander model” using a plug-in system derived from existing EV technology.
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is an all-new vehicle; as such it won’t see any major revisions for a few years.
2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Model Line-Up
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is a five-door crossover vehicle that holds up to seven passengers in three rows of seats.
As of this writing the vehicle is still in concept form, so few details are available about its powertrain or equipment levels. The Outlander is expected to have a gasoline V6 engine and possibly a fuel-efficient four-cylinder as well. Mitsubishi has also announced that an electric version will be available, utilizing the maker’s existing plug-in technology.
The new Outlander will be equipped with a number of electronic safety features, including a Forward Collision Mitigation System (which detects obstacles in the road and can apply the brakes to avoid a collision), adaptive cruise control and a lane-departure warning system.
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander will go on sale in Europe in summer 2012; it likely won’t go on sale in the U.S. until 2013.
