Vehicle Review: 2012 Scion iQ
2012 Scion iQ Total Car Score Analysis
Scion says the “i” in its name stands for “innovation,” “individuality,” and “intelligence,” and the “Q” refers to the car's cubic design.
The iQ was lauded by reviewers for offering a long list of standard amenities and safety features. It was also noted for its stylish good looks, superb fuel economy and easy parking lot maneuverability. Reviewers also said the iQ enjoys high-quality interior materials and plenty of front head room.
However, the iQ did not fare as well with regards to performance. Critics complained of an underpowered engine, slow acceleration and no manual option. Cabin issues include very limited rear seat space and the absence of telescopic steering.
The 2012 Scion iQ is a brand new model based on the recently debuted concept car of the same name.
2012 Scion iQ Model Line-Up
The 2012 Scion iQ is sold as a four-passenger hatchback available in only one well-equipped trim offering.
Standard features include 16-inch wheels, stereo with HD radio, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Although there are no available options, the iQ enjoys a long list of dealer-installed accessories. Among them are upgraded alloy wheels, a retuned suspension, foglights, an ambient lighting treatment and navigation.
Besides standard stability control and ABS, the iQ brings an unprecedented complement of eleven airbags, including two for the driver and front passenger knees and one at the rear window to help minimize injuries sustained in a rear collision event.
The iQ gets its power from a 1.3-liter inline-4 making 94 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque. A continuously varialble transmission (CVT) sends engine output to the front wheels only.
EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 2012 Scion iQ is 36 mpg city, 37 mpg highway and 37 mpg combined.
