Vehicle Review: 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STi
2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Total Car Score Analysis
The 2012 Subaru WRX STI doesn't have enough ratings to earn a valid Total Car Score.
Like previous WRX models, this latest generation WRX STI has a number of things going for it, not the least of which is muscular styling that makes it stand out from the crowd. Naturally, it also has the performance to back up those rough-and-tumble good looks thanks to a 305-horsepower engine, all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned suspension.
Among the negatives reviewers mentioned were the lackluster quality of the WRX STI's interior and its so-so audio system. While it is undeniably quick, some reviewers also commented that its overall handling capabilities aren't quite as sharp as some of its competitors. The fact that it requires premium fuel may also be a dealbreaker for some.
While the mainstream Impreza was thoroughly revamped this year, the 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI carries over on the old platform, making it a likely candidate for a substantial overhaul within the next 12 to 18 months.
2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Model Line-Up
The 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI is offered in both sedan and hatchback body styles and two trim levels.
All use the same powertrain, built around a turbocharged 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine that produces 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. A close-ratio six-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system with front and rear limited-slip differentials round out the drivetrain details.
The WRX STI comes standard with 18-inch wheels and performance tires, upgraded Brembo brakes, unique bodywork including a functional hood scoop, front and rear spoilers, xenon headlights, heated outside mirrors with built-in turn signals, keyless entry, automatic climate control, leather upholstery with suede-like inserts, heated front seats, 60/40-split-folding rear seats, Bluetooth cell phone/streaming audio connectivity and a six-speaker CD stereo.
The Limited model gets 18-inch BBS alloy wheels, fog lights, a sunroof and all-leather upholstery. Major options include a short-throw shifter, turbo boost gauge, navigation system and satellite radio.
EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI are 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.
