Long Test Drives for Late-Model Used Car Buyers

Some automakers have enticed new car shoppers with long test drives, sometimes for several days, over the past several years, but those buying a used car are typically limited to the 20-minute test drive that is so common when car shopping. Avis Budget Group, which owns Avis and Budget car rental companies, recently introduced a new program for consumers interested in purchasing one of their late-model rental cars.

Called the Ultimate Test Drive, car shoppers can choose from 75 different cars ranging from a Mini Cooper (shown here), to a Jeep Wrangler, to a BMW 3 Series, in addition to the more typical rental cars such as the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Impala. Ultimate Test Drives are available for two hours at no charge or up to three days at a basic rental fee, which is refunded if the car is purchased. All the cars in the program have no-haggle prices, which are listed on the program website. Transactions are completed through a partnership with AutoNation Direct.

The Ultimate Test Drive is currently available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida and Nevada, though it will be expanding to additional states in the future.
