Vehicle Review: 2011 Volvo S40

2011 Volvo S40 Total Car Score Analysis

As verified by its low Total Car Score, the 2011 Volvo S40 is outclassed by newer and more desirable entry-level luxury sedans.

In reviews, the S40 does earn praise for its strong engine performance, supportive front seats and solid safety scores.

There is a longer list of drawbacks, however, including a very cramped rear seat, a stiff ride quality and an overall exterior design that does little to help the S40 stand out. Chances are, most competing sedans will be better choices for entry-luxury shoppers.

The S40’s turbocharged five-cylinder engine is now standard equipment, as the normally aspirated engine has been discontinued. All-wheel drive has also been dropped this year.

The current generation of the Volvo S40 dates back seven years. It will be discontinued after the 2011 model year.

2011 Volvo S40 Model Line-Up

The 2011 Volvo S40 entry-level luxury sedan is offered in two trim levels: T5 and T5 R-Design.

Both trims are similar in terms of equipment, with the main difference being the R-Design's sportier exterior appearance. Popular optional features include a premium sound system, a navigation system and a blind-spot detection system.

For power, the S40 relies on a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 engine that generates 227 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard.

EPA fuel economy estimates are 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg in combined driving.
